Adding a DMARC record

From February 1st 2024, you must have a DMARC record to ensure you can send from BrandChamp using a custom sending domain to GMail or Yahoo accounts.

What is a DMARC record?

A DMARC record is a special text record added to your company’s DNS provider which controls what happens if an unauthenticated email is sent from your company's email domain. You can decide to reject or quarantine those emails for example, or to do nothing.

Who needs to add a DMARC record?

If you are using a custom sending domain in BrandChamp (which we recommend), you will need to add a DMARC record also.

You can check if you have a sending domain configured in the the Settings -> Emails area of your BrandChamp account.

Next Steps

  1. Check if you have a valid DMARC record for the sending domain you have configured in BrandChamp. If you have a record, no further action is required
  2. Learn how to create a DMARC record. There are also online tools to help.
  3. Add a “TXT” record in your DNS provider with your chosen settings (More below).

How do I add a DNS record?

We recommend asking your IT team for assistance with this, but you will need to find out which DNS provider your company uses and then look up their support articles on how to add a “TXT” record, as each one is a little different. Common DNS providers include GoDaddy and Namecheap.

Configuring DMARC

The simplest DNS record to add to satisfy GMail and Yahoo's current requirements would be:

Type: TXT

Host name: _dmarc

Value: v=DMARC1; p=none;

Here's how that might look in a DNS provider:

This record specifies a policy (“p”) of “none” so it will not have any effect on emails sent from your domain. However we recommend asking your IT department for assistance in understanding and configuring this record correctly as you may wish to set additional parameters.

For example the “rua” parameter provides regular reports of DMARC activity from your domain. You may receive high volume of report emails with that however, so you may want to consider third party tools to help process and report on those such as PostMark or Dmarcian.
