Walk Through: Creating a Referral Activity Type

Note: before setting up a referral activity, you will need to configure your Shopify Integration, Amazon integration, or Woo Commerce Integration.

To create a referral activity type, click the New drop-down in the "Activity Types" section of the admin site and select the appropriate Amazon, Shopify or Woo Commerce Referral Activity link:

In this walk through, we'll show how to set up a Shopify Referral Activity as we can demonstrate referral tracking via both discount codes and referral tracking links.

Click the "Shopify Referral Activity" link to bring us to the familiar Activity Type create screen:

Let's leave the task details with the pre-defined text (you can edit later if needed), and we won't add any pre-canned social content here yet either.

So click the "Next Step - Tracking Links" button:

Here, we can optionally create one or more referral tracking links. You can also edit the Activity Type later to add one but let's create one now by clicking the "add definition" link:

Destination URL

Most of the content is pre-filled for us - we just need to provide the "Destination URL". This is where we want to send people when they click on the referral link. This would normally be a link to your online store. For this example, I'm going to fill in a dummy URL - http://www.example.com

Template Token

The "Template Token" field is what will be used to refer to this tracking link definition from templates such as email templates and pre-defined content for sharing on social networks.

This will be covered later in more detail but briefly if you have a template with the text "Check out this awesome store! {{TL:SHOPIFY-REF-LINK}}", when a BrandChamp views it either in their email client or in their portal, the "{{TL:SHOPIFY-REF-LINK}}" text will have been replaced by the unique short URL generated for that BrandChamp for this tracking link definition.

Short URL Domain

Down at the bottom of the form, you have a selection of short URL domains to choose from. When the destination URL is combined with the BrandChamps unique referral code and the link is shortened, the short link will start with this selected domain.

Once you're happy, click "Next Step - Reward":

Referral Sales Commission

This field defines what percentage of the total order value will be credited to the BrandChamp as commission if a referral is detected. For example, you might give 5 or 10%. For this walk through, we'll pick 10%.

Conversion to Points

All credit in the BrandChamp system is tracked via points, so we need to convert the monetary commission value to points. We can define a mapping from monetary amount to points for each currency defined in your  BrandChamp settings.

By default, the system will pre-fill a one to one mapping as an example but this is by no means the recommended value. Each ambassador program is unique and you might assign a higher or lower value to BrandChamp points than the next program, so you need to give some thought to the values entered here.

For this walk through, we'll accept the default one-to-one mapping and click "Next Step - Presentation":

This is the standard presentation tab covered in detail elsewhere but one thing to note is that you must tick the "Available" checkbox if you want this activity to be active and the system to detect incoming referrals.

Finally, click Create to add our referral activity type.
